TOWEL CARE GUIDE
Made out of 100% brushed terry cotton or velour cotton, our towels are made to last long. A little TLC, however, goes a long way. Whether you prefer soft and thick towels or crispy and crunchy ones, here’s how you can take care of your towels and get them just the way you like them regardless of design and weight.
- HOW TO WASH YOUR TOWELS
Wash your towels every 3-4 uses. We recommend that terry towels be washed in 60°C, Hotel terry towels in 40°C, and velour towels in 40°C (warm) without bleach. Before washing, separate your colored towels from your whites. Use the right amount of detergent to prevent stiff towels, and unnecessary impact on the environment. Check the instructions on your detergent for more information on dosage.
- HOW TO DRY YOUR TOWELS
Remove towels from washing machine, give them a shake to loosen the fibers and pop them in the dryer. We recommend you tumble dry the towels on low to medium heat. You could add wool dryer balls in the drying cycle to further fluff and soften your towels. To avoid wrinkles, remove towels immediately from the dryer and fold. If you decide to iron them before folding, do so on low heat.
- HOW TO KEEP YOUR TOWELS SOFT
If you want a soft and thick-feeling towel after every wash, use fabric softener and dry your towel in a dryer. However, be prepared for less-absorbent towels because softeners reduce absorption capacity.
- HOW TO KEEP YOUR TOWELS CRUNCHY
Would you instead like your towels slightly rough and with ultimate absorption? Try line-drying and skip the fabric softener. The fibers will come out stiff and scratchy which will result in a nice exfoliation session after your bath.
- HOW TO RESTORE THE SOFTNESS OF YOUR TOWELS
If you already have a towel that is stiff, and you think it might be because you used too much detergent, try vinegar. To get rid of the residue causing stiff towels, you can run the towels through a regular washing cycle with distilled white vinegar instead of detergent. Once you know you've gotten rid of the residue, you can wash your towels with a detergent and add an extra rinse cycle to make sure all the product washes away.
OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN WASHING TOWELS
DETERGENT: The recommended dose on the detergent package is almost always too much. Excessive detergent leaves residue in towel fibers and causes them to feel scratchy. Try using less of what is recommended on the package and add an extra rinse cycle to make sure all the product washes away.
Product build-up in washing machines can also leave you with stiff towels. Clean your washing machine once a month by running an empty cycle with distilled white vinegar.
FABRIC SOFTENERS: We like softeners because they easily soften towels, but they leave a residue that reduces absorbency. You can replace fabric softeners with distilled white vinegar to combat said residue.
If you like the feel and scent left by fabric softeners, use them sparingly and do a deep cleaning every month or so with distilled white vinegar (as mentioned above) to prevent excessive build-up in the fibers'.
BLEACH: This harsh chemical flattens the textured loops that make up a towel’s fibers. Instead, try OxyClean.
HIGH TEMPERATURE: It can be tempting to crank up the heat when washing or drying your towels to banish germs, but that flattens the fibers. Once those fibers are flat, you'll never get them to soften up again. Heat also sets stains, so pre-treat your towels to lift stains instead of dialing up the heat in the washing machine.
OVERCROWDED WASHERS & DRYERS: Don’t load too many towels in your washer at once as your washer won’t have enough room to rinse out all the dirt and detergent from your towels. This results in the pesky product build-ups that ruin the softness of your towels. Tossing too many towels into a dryer is also a no-no. This causes towels to clump and tangle, which creates pockets of moisture that the dryer’s heat can’t reach, leaving you with still-wet towels that will be stiff and scratchy when they dry.
