Downright Cozy Jackets
From down jackets to cozy parkas, we’ve got the coverup that’ll get you through winter in style. But with all these wonderful options comes choice overload. To make your shopping experience and decision-making process easier, here’s a quick guide on the difference between down- and synthetic-filled outerwear.
Down-filled jackets
Our lofty and long-lasting down jackets are filled with 70% duck down and 30% feathers, both ethically sourced. Down, as you probably already know, is prized for being insulating, light, long-lasting, breathable and easy to compress. This is why down-filled jackets are at the top of our to-wear list in cold and dry conditions.
When shopping for a down jacket, one thing to keep in mind is the fill power. A duck-down jacket can have a fill power that ranges from 500-750. The higher this number is, the lighter the product is without compromising its insulating properties. Our down jackets have a fill power of 650 which means that less down is required to fill the jacket giving you a warm and light look and feel.
The loft, lightness and warmth a down jacket provides might make it seem as though you’ve found the one in a down jacket. Usually, we’d say you’ll need to take a break from your down jacket on a wet day. However, our down jackets are treated with a BIONIC-FINISH® ECO and TPU film finish. This little treatment makes our down jackets water-resistant allowing you to stroll the streets with confidence should you get caught in a sudden rain shower.
Though these jackets are water-resistant, they’re not waterproof. So, we advise against wearing them when it’s raining cats and dogs or washing them in a washing machine. If the water eventually came in contact with the down filling, the down would clump up and lose its loft and insulating power.
Synthetic/down-filled jackets
Instead of down-filled jackets, opt for our jackets and vests filled with polyester or down, polyester & feather mix on those rainy days. Though they may not be as warm as down jackets, they are more water-resistant than down-filled jackets. The polyester filling dries much quicker than down and regains its loft much more easily after a rainy outing. Most of these jackets are also treated with a BIONIC-FINISH ® ECO and TPU/PA film finish to make them water-resistant.
Before you go gaga for these jackets, you should know that synthetic-filled jackets won’t keep you warm on cold days when paired with a tank top, unlike a down-filled jacket. However, this little con makes synthetic/down-filled jackets so versatile. Pair them with heavy knits to wear on those cold, wet days and with lighter clothes in the in-between seasons.
Now that you’re armed with this useful information, you will always stay warm regardless of what the thermometer might show.
