Directions for the Cookie Ornaments

Heat the butter, syrup and sugar together until melted, stirring occasionally so the sugar doesn't burn. Set aside to cool slightly.

In a bowl, mix the remaining dry ingredients. Pour in the butter syrup and stir. With a pastry blender or your hands, knead the mixture into a soft dough. Chill the dough in a fridge for at least two hours or overnight to give the ingredients a chance to absorb one another. Chilling the dough will make it firmer preventing it from cracking while rolling it out.

When ready, flatten the dough into a disk on a sheet of parchment paper. Place another sheet of parchment paper and roll out the dough into a rectangle or square until it's ½cm thick. Place the dough on a sheet pan, with parchment paper on, and chill for an hour.

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line another sheet pan with parchment paper. Cut out desired shapes using cookie cutters or freestyle them if you like rustic cookies. Whatever you decide, just make sure you punch a hole in the cookies before you bake them. The hole is for you to thread ribbons through to turn the cookies into ornaments.

Bake your cookies, spread apart, on the lined baking sheet for 10-12 mins. The smaller the cookies the less time they'll need to be baked. Once they're done let the cookies cool before you thread them with ribbons and hang them on your tree or gift them.

Enjoy!
